description abstract | Objectively analyzed wind fields from the tropical western Pacific in the area of the ITCZ (Marshall Islands, April?July 1958) were used to evaluate average monthly values of the large-scale terms in the vorticity equation. Large imbalances, interpreted as representing subgrid-scale processes, were found to exist. Results indicate excellent correlation between the imbalances and the intense convection associated with the ITCZ. Based upon these results, it is suggested subgrid-scale cumulus convection processes play an important role in the vertical transport of vorticity in tropical oceanic regions during spring and summer. This indicates that in addition to the well-known effects of vertical transport of heat and momentum by cumulus clouds, parameterization of vorticity advection by cumulus convection should be included in tropical models. | |
