Abstract: Several area-conserving transformations of the power spectrum and their presentation and interpretation are discussed. The presentation of the power density multiplied by frequency on a natural logarithm of frequency scale is shown to be the most appropriate for the purpose of defining dominant scales. This presentation is also shown to have a clear interpretation for spectra of localized disturbances. A null hypothesis of ?no dominant scale? is proposed for the determination of dominant scales and their statistical significance.
