Abstract: A ?breadboard? model of the proposed satellite infrared spectrometer for the measurement of atmospheric temperature profiles was used in two experiments at ground level. These were designed to demonstrate the feasibility of the instrument and to investigate some of the hazards involved in inverting the radiation integral. It is shown in the second experiment that realistic temperature profiles can be obtained when some smoothing of the observations is introduced.
