Abstract: This paper addresses the training of entry-level engineers for civil engineering and design consulting practice. A survey was conducted for both managers and engineers representing 26 firms in Alaska. Managers rated the entry-level engineer's skills/knowledge of design elements within the consulting-engineering business, and the entry-level engineers rated themselves in these areas. The discrepancies between the managers' and engineers' ratings are highlighted to provide focus areas for a consulting firm's internal training program and university civil engineering program curriculum.
