Abstract: The exact kinematic bottom boundary condition is w = u·?h. The linearized form in an incompressible flow is w = ?·(uh at z = 0. Use of the approximate linearized form w = u·?h at z = 0 eliminates the phase shift of the transmitted wave in a Kelvin wave scattering calculation, and it significantly modifies the transmitted and reflected waves in a one-dimensional long-wave scattering calculation, even when u·?h?h?·u over most of the topography.
