Abstract: Supercooling of the surface water on open leads in the Arctic Ocean has been suggested as a possible source of water for the observed subsurface freezing. Observations with an infrared radiometer at the shore-lead outside Pt. Barrow, Alaska, in April 1972, verify this supposition.
