Abstract: The Operational data-collection phase of the International Satellite Cloud Climatology Project(ISCCP) began in July 1983 as an element of the World Climate Research Program (WCRP). Since then, raw images from an international network of operational geostationary and polar-orbiting meteorological satellites have been routinely processed to develop a global data set of calibrated radiances and derived cloud parameters for climate research. This report outlines the key steps involved in producing the basic ISCCP reduced-resolution global radiance (B3) data set, describes the main features of the data set, and indicates the principal point of contact for obtaining copies of the data tapes. A future paper will focus on the derived cloud properties and their utilization.
