Abstract: The total response of a linear two-layer stationary wave model to all the forcing functions (mountains, diabatic heating, nonlinear eddy fluxes) was calculated using various reflection coefficients for the critical latitude (CL). The reflectivity was regulated by modifying the y-derivative of the absolute vorticity near the CL. The vertical resolution of the model is so low that no CL reflection coefficient produced anything better than a mediocre simulation. A two-layer model, however, proved to be considerably better than a single-layer model. The best simulations were obtained with low CL reflectivities.
