Abstract: Various methods of estimating the magnitude of the random error of Doppler lidar velocity measurements are compared for typical operating conditions using computer simulations of lidar data. Under certain conditions, the magnitude of the random estimation error can be determined from data without the need for in situ measurements for both ground-based and space-based wind measurement.
