The Dependence of Core Radius on Swirl Ratio in a Tornado Simulator

Abstract: The nondimensional radius of the turbulent core in Ward's laboratory tornado model is shown to be primarily a function of swirl ratio alone. Thus, for given circulation and updraft radius, high-volume flow rate (but not necessarily high momentum flux) is required for the production of concentrated vortices.
