Abstract: Experimental evidence is presented to show that the process of activation in ice nucleation is due to a surface phase change which takes place within the layer of water adsorbed on the nucleating substrate. The outstanding activation of a wide variety of organic compounds suggests that organic residues in the atmosphere may be a source of activated ice nuclei.
