Abstract: Index of refraction data measured by a Crain microwave refractometer mounted in a Boeing 707 jet aircraft on two flights during August 1959 are presented. Emphasis is placed on the horizontal portions of the flights at the 150-mb level, but climbout and descent data are also given. Comparisons are made with theoretical data and index data computed from radiosondes. Some conclusions are drawn about the variability of the index of refraction in the lower stratosphere.
