| description abstract | All available rawin observations taken within 400 mi from the centers of monsoon depressions in the Indian area have been used to obtain a picture of the average upper-wind circulation around the depressions. Cyclonic circulation is found to persist in the southwestern sector up to a height of 9 km, while in the other sectors it disappears at lower levels. Rainfall patterns associated with the depressions have been compared with the circulation in the upper levels. The inflow and outflow of air from the system have been assessed. The application of the concept of ?steering? has been examined. | |
