Abstract: A simple quasi-Newton numerical scheme is applied to determine the hypothetical worst-case meteorology that will result in the maximum combined concentrations at any receptor location in air quality modeling over short distances for multiple point sources. Also, a search procedure is suggested to investigate the combination of location and atmospheric conditions of wind direction, wind speed, and stability that produces the highest possible ground-level concentration, the so-called critical concentration. The proposed methodology may help in applications in design of stacks, air quality management, and air pollution episode control planning.
