Abstract: A small city until the 1800s, Shanghai has developed very quickly in recent times, especially since 1950. As the city economy has grown, many new buildings and factories have been constructed, and working and living conditions for people in the city have gradually improved. However, the growth of Shanghai's population is now causing a number of serious problems, including a housing shortage, traffic congestion, and environmental pollution. Although efforts have been made to reduce these problems and to continue the improvement in Shanghai's working and living conditions, the current solutions are inadequate. This paper focuses on the role of an underground infrastructure and the development of underground space in the city as a contributor to the solution of these problems.
