Abstract: Three formulas are presented for designing pipelines of optimum diameter with equally‐spaced, similar pumping units. Each of the three formulas corresponds to a particular zone on a Moody diagram, namely, laminar flow, turbulent flow in general, and wholly rough turbulent flow. The general case of a sloping pipeline with fittings is considered, and an analysis is made to show to what extent fittings affect the choice of the optimum diameter. Design charts are also provided and the procedure to be followed in designing a pipeline of optimum diameter is presented. Finally three numerical examples are solved to show the practicability of the design formulas and charts.
