    Abstract: This paper presents a method, which uses techniques from adaptive control, to identify a simplified model of a complex structure using measurements of the input excitation and forces and the output displacements of the structure, as well as some basic assumptions about the structure of the simplified model being identified. Examples are presented in which the input and output to relatively complex plane frame models are used to identify simplified models with significantly fewer degrees of freedom. One of these original complex models is a benchmark structure for which a highly accurate evaluation model has been developed for the purpose of testing controller designs. Using the simplified model of the complex benchmark structure that has been identified, a controller is designed using an existing controller design algorithm and tested using the evaluation model.
