description abstract | The Π breakage theory, originally developed for coal breakage, has been suggested as a model for describing the breakage of various components in municipal refuse. In the theory, the Π term is defined as the fraction of particles that are broken during the size reduction operation. The results of size reduction experiments on seven components of municipal refuse show that Π is not constant for all particle sizes, and that the theory is invalid. The results show that the fraction of particles that are broken during the size reduction operation decreases with decreasing particle size. | |
