Abstract: Using rectangular elements, a consistent finite-element Vlasov model is developed to analyze plates resting on a layered soil medium. The soil properties can vary linearly in the vertical direction. The disadvantages of use of the classical Winkler model—those yielding nonconservative values of bending moment and shear forces—are brought out in the paper.
