Bridge Design and the “Bridge Aesthetics Bibliograph”

    Source: Journal of Structural Engineering:;1989:;Volume ( 115 ):;issue: 004
    Author:
    Martin P. Burke, Jr.
    DOI: 10.1061/(ASCE)0733-9445(1989)115:4(883)
Publisher: American Society of Civil Engineers
Abstract: The recently compiled “Bridge Aesthetics Bibliography” (from the Transportation Research Board) is described using quotes and illustrations from some of the references. It is suggested that a study of the literature of bridge aesthetics and a consideration of the advice, opinions, and illustrations contained therein will help to ensure that all four major aspects of design—function, safety, economy, and aesthetics—will be considered and optimized.
