description abstract | A finite element analysis of single‐bay two‐span continuous cylindrical shells subjected to support settlements and experimental results on model studies are presented. The experimental investigation confirms the validity of the finite element analysis. Support settlements cause a considerable magnitude of additional stresses in the shell which may lead to failure. Critical zones are identified and the possibilities of failure are discussed for each case. | |
