Abstract: A method for computing response spectra for bilinear hysteretic systems subjected to earthquake accelerograms is summarized. The technique provides the exact solution to the equation of motion for ground acceleration which varies linearly between successive digitized points. The complete solutions for the elastic and plastic components of the response are developed, and include underdamped, critically damped, and overdamped cases. A comparison of this analytical technique with five widely known alternative procedures is presented.
