Abstract: This paper reviews the effect of prestress on a simple truss design problem with two loading conditions. Optimality criteria are formulated on the “sum” and “difference” problems. These criteria are subsequently interpreted to imply that the optimal design is fully stressed and to develop an iterative design scheme. Examples are included.
