description abstractDetailed analysis of the flash temperature and the partition of heat between gear teeth has been made. The problem is treated as an unsteady one where the intensity and the moving velocity of heat source changes momentarily as mesh proceeds. Making a comparison between the results and Blok’s simple solution, the latter shows too high values of flash temperature at a few specific points; for example, it gives over 15 percent higher temperature at the starting point of mesh, but the difference between these solutions becomes smaller as the meshing point moves toward the ending point of mesh. The effects of tooth load, number of revolutions, module, shifting and profile modification are illustrated and discussed. For the most part, their effects are larger than Blok’s. Some experiments are performed, and using measured dynamic load, flash temperature is calculated and compared with measured one.
