description abstractObservations of Taylor vortex formation in a short annular clearance show that the final vortex size varies discontinuously with annulus length, ranging from 75 to 115 percent of the theoretical size, and is apparently determined as vortices spread axially inwards from the ends of the annulus by the minimum survival size of the last-formed vortex pair.
