description abstractWhen analyzing the problem of calculating the pressures developed during the normal approach of two bodies through an oil film, it is usual to assume that the rate of change of film thickness does not vary along the film at any given time. The ranges of validity of this assumption are estimated for the case of thin elastic layer indented through an oil film by a rigid cylindrical roller.
