description abstractThe principle of superposition is used to combine the results of separate stiffness analyses of (a) a solid shaft loaded by a band of external pressure, using classical elasticity methods and (b) a hollow shaft loaded by bore surface tractions, using finite-element methods. The combined results provide solutions to the case of hollow shafts of infinite length loaded on their outer surface by a uniform band of external pressure; these results are presented in tabular form for a range of hollow shafts of different thicknesses.
