description abstractA statistical analysis of a large quantity of data was made to evaluate the typical Charpy V-notch properties of SA533, grade B, class 1 quenched and tempered, and SA516, grade 70, normalized and tempered materials. The orientation of the specimen, with respect to the rolling direction of the plate under test, was considered in measuring impact properties. Other variables were plate thickness and position within the plate from which the specimens were sampled. The analysis considered both the “RW” and “WR” orientations of 1/4 thickness specimens. The statistical population of the data for SA533 RW orientation was compiled from tests on approximately 670 commercial plates, and includes plate thicknesses up to 12 in. Because of the large population, statistics are good and “typical” values are considered accurate. Charpy V-notch curves are presented to indicate the expected values of impact energy and lateral expansion at a particular temperature for the materials in question. These curves indicate that the impact transition properties of 10 to 12-in. thick SA533, grade B, class 1 quenched and tempered material form an accurate baseline transition curve which gives a conservative estimate for toughness behavior of the three materials investigated. The shift in drop weight nil-ductility temperature (DWNDT) with increasing plate thickness of SA533 quenched and tempered material does not appear to be the same as the shift in Cv transition curves for associated thicknesses.
