description abstractThe nature and the size of the cutting forces were investigated to develop a model that accounts for their fluctuation. Due to the interaction between the velocity of the power cylinder and the cutting forces, the governing equations contained periodic coefficients. Stability analysis showed that the fluctuations of the cutting forces and their averages played important roles. Dimensionless plots were developed to be used as a guide for the design and operation of copying mechanisms. The kinematic accuracy of copying was found to be influenced most by the coefficient of leakage, and the degree of under lap of the spool valve. Digital and analog approaches were used in this study.
