description abstractThis paper presents results from a computer based technique for the evaluation and graphic display of stress, deformation, and fracture patterns in gear teeth when subjected to dynamic loading. The method is illustrated for conditions of impulsive loads applied at different points on the tooth surface and moving loads normal to the tooth profile. The technique incorporates a viscoelastic model for the material properties and prespecified failure criteria. The accuracy of the simulation is investigated by applying a Hertzian impact on a cantilever beam and comparing the analytical results with those obtained by strain gages placed at the root. The simulation procedure provides a versatile and powerful means for the analysis and design of gears subjected to dynamic loading.
