description abstractThe basic theory of surge wave propagation in stranded wire, helical coil springs, including the effects of damping, has been presented. Solutions for spring forces, coil velocities and displacements, separation times of mass and spring, and the time to stop the impacting mass have been developed for the following cases: (a) mass impacting a preloaded spring, (b) spring launching a mass, (c) expansion of a preloaded spring, and (d) mass impacting an unloaded spring.
