description abstractThe motion of a particle on an oscillating trough having both longitudinal and normal accelerations is studied in order to determine the optimum conditions for conveying material using this trough. The analysis is limited to the case where the particle does not lose contact with the trough at any point of the cycle; moreover, simplified hypothetical stepped acceleration cycles both in the longitudinal and normal directions of the trough are assumed. Advantage is taken from the normal acceleration to improve the performance of the oscillating trough. Guidelines for rational design are underlined.
