description abstractObserved average breakup lengths are presented for free orifice jets of superheated water and liquid nitrogen, and subcooled water. Dimensionless, semiempirical expressions are developed for both flashing, and aerodynamic and/or capillary, breakup, and verified with data. The distribution function for breakup length is predicted for the superheated case with the help of Boltzmann statistics.
