description abstractThe mixing efficiency of red blood cells and magnetic microspheres with red blood cell tagging ability is investigated using color particle image velocimetry. A hybrid separation system that utilizes centrifugation and magnetic separation is described. Magnetic microspheres are utilized to isolate the red cells from the buffy coat on a continuous basis. The effectiveness of red blood cell separation from the buffy coat in the hybrid system was improved over conventional centrifugal separation methods.
