description abstractThis paper studies the characteristics of micro tangential deflection of the interface of mating machined surfaces subjected to normal and tangential forces. Experimental results show that contact interface subjected to a tangential force experiences elastic deformation, plastic deformation and micro slip before macro-breakaway occurs. The linearity of tangential stiffness is only valid in the stage of elastic deformation. The nonlinear tangential stiffness of the interface should be considered in the stages of elastic and plastic deformation before micro-breakaway occurs.
