description abstractThis special issue of the ASME JOURNAL OF BIOMECHANICAL ENGINEERING features articles on various aspects of cellular and tissue engineering. These studies were part of a symposium entitled “Cell and Tissue Engineering” at the 1999 Bioengineering Conference in Big Sky, Montana, June 16–20, 1999. This biennial conference, which is sponsored by the Bioengineering Division of ASME, has grown rapidly in size and stature. It integrates the participation and discussion from a number of biomedical engineering societies (BMES, AIChE, ASCE, etc.) as well as many biological scientists who normally may not attend engineering conferences. Arising from this meeting are issues at the molecular, cell, and tissue levels that stretch the bounds of biomechanical engineering, opening fresh, new fields of endeavor.
