description abstractThis paper proposes that the dimensional control of stampings requires not only surface measurement but also measurement of the strain distribution in the part. A simple model of forming a smooth panel over a die is presented and used to show how small changes in variables such as friction can affect “shape fixability” and dent resistance. It is argued that this variability in stampings can be controlled by comparing a measured strain distribution with one specified in the design stage.
