description abstractThis paper presents a study on the effect of gear constraint on the whirl of simple-supported pinion shafts with and without overhung masses. A special tester capable of simulating the different conditions influencing the whirling of geared shafts is utilized. An empirical procedure is given for predicting the main resonance frequencies. The calculated values show close agreement with results from tests on several shafts supported on ball bearings.
