description abstractThis paper presents stability data for a very long vertical pipe transmitting torque in a viscous medium. In addition to these factors, distributed pipe weight and hydrostatic-fluid pressure effects are included, distinguishing the problem from classic problems discussed in present literature. The additional factors of pipe weight and fluid pressure introduce terms having variable coefficients into the coupled differential equations. The coupled equations are combined into one equation by use of a complex dependent variable. The resulting equation is solved by separation of variables and power series methods.
