description abstractThis paper investigates theoretical formulations for the radiation and “drag”-dependent hydrodynamic damping mechanisms for vertical bottom-pivoted cylinders under excitation by irregular uni-directional Pierson-Moskowitz waves. Experimental verification of the coexistence of these two forms of hydrodynamic damping is provided from the results of a program of research being conducted in the Michell Laboratory at the University of Melbourne on a wide range of cylinder test conditions.
