description abstractLaser Doppler Vibrometry is presented as an effective method of measuring surface profiles of rolling contact bearing balls. An experimental setup and signal processing algorithm are used to obtain digitized surface profiles and statistical measurements of ball surfaces. Tests are made on two different grades of high precision balls and the results are compared. Measurements are presented that match lobed ball frequency results with a resolution of 0.025 microns. The method is well suited for a manufacturing environment because of its durability, simplicity, and high speed.
