description abstractThe self-ignition and smoldering characteristics of cellulosic materials, as exemplified by cotton fibers, when subjected to convective low-velocity heated air stream were studied experimentally at atmospheric pressure. The effects of the content of moisture in the raw cotton on its ignition delay and smolder front propagation rates were established. Some comparative tests were also conducted on dry cotton samples containing instead of moisture, various concentrations of n-hexane or an alcohol mixture.
