description abstractTwo alternative but equivalent stability criteria for linear conservative gyroscopic systems are presented. The development of the criteria is based on the concept of symmetrizability associated with general matrices, and the results are in terms of the matrices describing the dynamical system. Although the new criteria involves a scalar parameter, the restrictions associated with an earlier result are removed, and the scope of application is broadened. An illustrative example is presented.
