description abstractPractical difficulties that are inherent to the solution of optimization problems by nonhierarchic decomposition are discussed. The study is motivated by design problems that require the optimization of a system comprised of several, tightly coupled subsystems or components. A strategy for the optimization of such problems is presented. Examples are provided for illustration.
