description abstractThe principles of a new in-process measurement and control system for flatness errors in machining have been introduced. The laser-based system consists of a stylus, a geometrical table measurement system, and a forecasting compensatory controller. Through the application of the proposed system to simulated and actual cutting data it has been shown that improvements of flatness on the order of 80 percent are feasible.
