description abstractIt is shown that the difference between the forces acting on the top and bottom plates of a squeeze-film bearing, or the transmission loss, is entirely an inertia phenomenon and arises due to the acceleration of the top plate (the bottom plate is stationary). Its magnitude is given by half of the mass of the fluid film multiplied by the top plate acceleration. This is valid for Newtonian and some Oldroyd-B fluid provided that edge effects are negligible and no bifurcation of solution occurs.
