description abstractThis paper is a report on an improved technique to study the formation of chips while observing them through a metallurgical microscope. By using polished and etched specimens it is possible to see the formation of slip lines in front of the tool as plastic deformation initiates. The mechanism of the chip-formation process is clearly shown on a 16-mm motion-picture film that is presented with this paper.
