description abstractA method based on fracture mechanics solutions for a circumferential crack is used to measure the distribution of axial residual stresses in the circumferential weld between two cylinders. The case considered is a 22 pass weld and the residual stress is obtained in the form of a Legendre polynomial series. The results are in general agreement with published values for multi-pass welds on similar material. However, the present approach appears to be considerably simpler and easier to implement than existing experimental methods.
