description abstractA digital signal processing technique is proposed for calculating the amplitude and phase modulation of the tooth meshing vibration of a gear from the signal average of the vibration with application to the early detection of local defects such as fatigue cracks. The importance of phase modulation in the detection of defects is confirmed.
