description abstractThis paper describes the analysis of J -integral and crack growth for the surface cracks in work-hardening bodies. First, the complementary energy method has been formulated, which evaluates the stiffness and J -integral of the single-edge-cracked plate under combined tension and bending. Next, the complementary energy method has been combined with the thick shell line spring method in order to analyze the J -integral and crack growth for the surface cracks. It has been shown that the J -integral and crack growth for the surface cracks in work-hardening plates and shells can be analyzed by this method in short computing time and with good accuracy.
